Join us for a guided walk with our very own plant expert (and nature enthusiast!) Jon Blais, as we walk through Fishtrap Creek Park and learn about the native trees that call it home. Along the way, you’ll learn how to identify different tree species, hear the stories they tell, and explore the vital roles they play in our ecosystem. Whether you’re a nature lover, a curious beginner, or just looking for a peaceful outing—this tour offers a new way to connect with the forest around you.

There are three short tours to choose from, each with the same awesome content and limited to 10 people. Registration required.

Are you someone who wants to make a difference for nature and the people of the Fraser Valley? Do you want to see invasive plant species being managed? If so, we want you on our team! We’re looking for energetic volunteers to help us clear some invasive plants at Fishtrap Creek Park in Abbotsford. All tools and training will be provided.

Before we take action, Jon, our Habitat Enhancement Coordinator, will take us on a short walk to share information about the species that call Fishtrap Creek Park home.

Grab your crew and kick off the Taste of Abby Fall Festival with us!

Taste of Abby is a multi-day celebration from September 19–28, 2025 of Abbotsford’s rich agricultural roots and vibrant arts and cultural scene.

The festivities kick off with the outdoor Night Market on Friday, September 19, where you can indulge in specialty culinary and libation offerings that highlight the best local flavours, all set to the soundtrack of the Fraser Valley’s top musicians. From unique farm-to-table dinners to exciting pop-up events and exclusive specialty experiences, Taste of Abby offers endless ways to savour the very best of Abbotsford.

Create beautiful bouquets and poems at the same time using Floriography, a trend of sharing heartfelt emotions from the Victorian times. It is the art of encoding messages in a bouquet based on the chosen flowers and their assigned meanings. Using the definitions and phrases provided, we can create a poem! This will all be photographed to create a unique digital anthology, before the bouquets and poems are taken home.

This event is free and available for all ages and abilities.

Supervision is requested for children under the age of 12.

Darryl moved to Langley from Calgary some 40 years ago, back when Langley was a quiet little farm town. His family roots meander all the way back to Saskatchewan. He has studied engineering and philosophy, been a truck driver, a dishwasher a firefighter and many other things. For 25 years he worked with Indigenous communities on issues around economic and social development focused on reconciliation.

Darryl is primarily self-taught on the guitar and banjo. His music is a ragtag collection of songs about boats, trains, coffee, (and some women too), old cowboys, and some foot stomping guitar and banjo instrumentals. Some songs are originals, other are covers. He’ll get that banjo ringing, fingerpick a tune or two and then flat-pick some bluegrass on that old six string guitar. He calls it “Highbrow Hillbilly” Music.

Come have some creative fun with the Fraser Valley Watermedia Society! Drop by for a relaxed “En Plein Air” painting session on the lawns near the Kariton Art Gallery. Try your hand at outdoor painting with free supplies, tips from local artists, and plenty of inspiration all around.

We would love for you to join us for the 2 year Celebration of Open Space on September 27th, 10 – 2pm.

We are excited to be unveiling a Community Art Project called “Abbotsford Says Hello”, where we are bringing together the well more than 116 languages, and 167 countries, represented in Abbotsford in one artwork collage of a flower garden.

You are invited to write Hello in your native language on a petal, painted at one of our kids painting sessions, which will come together in the colourful and vibrant final artwork reflecting our beautiful city. This project is being created by talented local artist Linda Klippenstein, and supported by Open Space Art Coordinator Olivia Harks and Community Engagement Rupi Kanda-Rajwan of the Abbotsford Downtown Business Association.

We are thrilled to be welcoming Stephanie Ohlmann to the event – whose research at the UFV – “It Starts With Hello” – uncovered that there are now more than 116 languages spoken in Abbotsford, and what these languages are. Learn about her new children’s book “Hello Abbotsford” while exploring the interactive audio buttons to discover the many ways to say Hello in our city, and see how a single “hello” can make a difference!

Amy Van Bergen is a multimedia artist, poet, and singer/songwriter with over 200 original songs in her repertoire and over 15 years of live performance experience. Her songwriting style is folk/jazz storyteller, with a voice that’s been compared to “a crisp light beer” by one listener at a local brewery.

Join artist Luke Pardy for a day of food-based print making. In this session, you will learn how to use food scraps as print making tools. This activity is inspired by locally authored recipes and Abbotsford’s history of food production.

Along with making prints of your own you will also be able to contribute to community created prints that will be featured in Pardy’s upcoming artist-publication which reimagines community co-authored cookbooks for the contemporary moment.

This activity is for all ages. No registration required. Free to join!

Drop-by Mill Lake at the Ware Street entrance and enjoy a live solo performance from Stevan Oostenbrug as part of Go Play Outside. Free, no registration required!

Stevan Oostenbrug’s music offers gentle examinations of complex, yet common, interpersonal issues. Through nature-inspired lyricism, he delivers finger-picking style guitar and baritone vocals in a style similar to Feist, Daughter, and Hozier.

Led by Kelley Tialiou, The Reach’s Curator of Art & Visual Culture, this mural walk in Abbotsford’s Historic Downtown district will highlight a few recent collaborative mural projects developed as part of The Reach Gallery Museum’s CITI/SEEN program, including Sasq’ets Rides the Milky Way (2023), designed and painted by Carrielynn Victor, with contributions by Kaiden Alford, Nina Kroeker, Isabella Nielsen, and Ketty Zhang; and Hearts of the Valley, a mural by Kiranjot Kaur, Aysha McConkey, Jaqueline Stuerzl, and Jamie Wallman, led by mentor artist Chantelle Trainor-Matties.

Launched in 2019, CITI/SEEN is a public art program that supports the design and delivery of murals in Historic Downtown Abbotsford through a mentorship model. Come join in the art of Wool Weaving with Spelexilh, Anjeanette Dawson.

Participants will learn how to weave a quarter bag on cardboard using the two-strand twining technique. Learn how to add colour and how to create pattern and design, while hearing about the history and revival of the traditional style of Coast Salish wool weaving.

Join Team EmpowHER for a fun, energetic session of Bhangra Aerobics at Clearbrook Library. Participants will move to the beat of Bhangra music. Guaranteed to sweat and have a great time.

All levels are welcome, no Bhangra experience necessary. It’s all about movement and having fun.

Our local civic organizations have united around Thunderbird Square and Civic Plaza with a common goal – to create a space for learning and understanding. We’re walking together to share learning opportunities for the public about Truth and Reconciliation, as well as the history of Residential Schools.

Join us on this journey on September 30, 2025, as we come together to build a deeper awareness of our roles in the path to Reconciliation.

 

The gathering will start with the Opening Ceremony at 10 AM at Thunderbird Square, followed by the opening of each station.
